Le Mayeur Museum is located directly within the Sanur Beach area in Bali. The closest access to the museum is via Jalan Hang Tuah, Denpasar. Visitors must continue on foot to reach the museum, as it is situated within the beach area. Cars and motorcycles are required to be parked at designated parking areas.
The museum is designed in the style of a traditional Balinese house, featuring distinctive carved walls and a monument statue commemorating the owners of the house, Le Mayeur and Ni Pollok.
Le Mayeur was a Belgian painter, while Ni Pollok was a native Balinese woman. Le Mayeur began his life in Bali in 1932, where he met Ni Pollok, who remained the primary model for his paintings until the end of his life.
Le Mayeur became a renowned painter both in Indonesia and internationally. In 1956, the Minister of Education decided to designate his house as a museum, a decision that was warmly welcomed by Le Mayeur and his family. As a result, in 1957, Le Mayeur Museum was officially opened and became the property of the Government of Indonesia.
Le Mayeur Museum houses a collection of paintings by Le Mayeur. The museum consists of four exhibition rooms, an inauguration area, and an art gallery.
Most of the paintings depict landscapes and scenes of daily life, with female figures modeled after Ni Pollok. Some of Le Mayeur’s works date back to 1937, when he used colored chalk on paper as his medium.
In 1942, he began painting on burlap rice sacks (bagor), using rich colors and a semi-abstract style. Most of the paintings displayed at the museum are reproductions rather than originals, as the museum’s proximity to the beach and exposure to sea air are not suitable for preserving certain types of artwork.
Overall, Le Mayeur Museum is modest in scale and presents information and artworks in a way that is easy for visitors to understand.
