Mangupura, July 31, 2025 – In line with the passenger journey program and technology-based airport management, PT Angkasa Pura Indonesia has adjusted its security system by discontinuing checked baggage screening at the entrance of the international terminal of I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport.
This step is aimed at improving security standards, passenger comfort, and service efficiency. Following a trial simulation in June 2025, the new system has been fully implemented since July 15, 2025.
By utilizing multi-view dual-energy x-ray (MVXR) technology at the Hold Baggage Screening Check Point (HBSCP), the baggage screening process has become more effective, allowing for clearer and more accurate detection of dangerous items. Meanwhile, screening for passengers and cabin baggage is now carried out only once before entering the departure waiting area at the Passenger Security Check Point (PSCP).
General Manager of I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport, Ahmad Syaugi Shahab, explained that this policy is part of the effort to reduce passenger interaction points or touchpoints, especially those that could cause queues.
“We aim to create a seamless journey that is smooth and comfortable for all airport users.
International passengers no longer need to undergo a screening or pre-screening process at the terminal entrance.
They can proceed directly to the check-in counters.
Passenger and baggage screening is now carried out just once, before entering the departure waiting area.
A similar system has already been implemented at the domestic departure terminal,” he said.
He added,
“On average, more than 31,000 passengers depart through I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport each day, which is about 1,300 passengers per hour. During peak seasons, this number is even higher.
With this system in place, baggage and passenger screening is more efficient while fully maintaining aviation security standards.
Most importantly, passenger travel time is now shorter, more comfortable, and more enjoyable.”
Syaugi further emphasized that flight safety and security remain the management’s top priority in airport operations.
This program follows international aviation security standards, as outlined in the amended Annex 17 Doc 8973 and the Indonesian Minister of Transportation Decree No. KM 39 of 2024 on the National Aviation Security Program.
In accordance with aviation regulations, certain items are strictly prohibited in checked baggage, including explosives or flammable substances, compressed gases, oxidizing agents, toxic materials, corrosive substances, and radioactive items.
“We urge the public to carefully follow aviation regulations.
Do not place prohibited items in checked baggage, such as power banks, electronic cigarettes, or other items containing lithium batteries, as stipulated in airline requirements.
Aviation security is our shared responsibility,” Syaugi concluded.
